The UviLux is an innovative, sensitive, low cost, digital in-situ UV fluorimeter that offers the user significantly increased functionality compared to existing UV fluorimeters.  It can monitor in real time the concentration of refined hydrocarbons (365nm) or crude hydrocarbons (450nm) in a wide range of coastal, oceanographic and fresh water applications. It has been designed into an acetal housing suitable for deploying independently as well as from submersible vehicles, moored or profiling systems. This robust, compact, lightweight fluorimeter has very low power consumption, is easy to use and gives accurate and repeatable measurements.

The fluorometer utilizes a novel UV LED light source and a miniature 8-stage photomultiplier coupled to a low noise preamp, when combined with phase sensitive detection this provides highly sensitive measurement capabilities. The sophisticated electronic signal processing, combined with cowl design principles employed in our UV AQUAtracka, enables the UviLux to operate successfully in high levels of ambient light. Because of this, there is no requirement to pump sample through a dark measurement chamber, thus obviating the need for water flow corrections or the cost, inconvenience and power drain of a pump. For deck & laboratory applications, a flow through manifold is available.

Ease of use and installation is further enhanced by the provision of galvanic isolation between the power and signal 0V rails within UviLux, thereby avoiding possible 'ground loops'. The highly efficient, proprietary, d.c. converter can also handle an unusually wide range of supply voltages ranging between 9V and 36V without significant change in the power consumption of 1.3W.
Two signals can be obtained from the standard UviLux: the first is a digital RS232 output in engineering units, the second a 0V to 5V volt calibrated analogue output derived from the digital signal. A single RS422 output is also available as an option. This flexibility makes the UviLux suitable for integrating into many different systems and platforms.

A Windows based Graphical User Interface (GUI) is provided that allows the user to both plot and record time stamped data when operating the UviLux directly from a PC and gives control over a many instrument parameters, including: sampling rate, detector sensitivity, and calibration factors. Although small and low cost, the UviLux fluorimeter maintains the performance standards and build quality previously maintained by the CTG’s range of in-situ fluorimeters.
